I lost 3 drives on my home machine in ~9 months, then I put an intake fan (and filter) in the case so that the air was forced over the HDs as it entered the case. 4 years later, haven't had to replace another drive in that machine. The dead drives all had bearing failure and wouldn't spin, or made an evil noise when trying to spin.
