One of the big draws of electric cars is that they can make use of low power grid demand times between about 9 pm and 6 am. And yes, you are right that, at first at least, they should stick to relatively small and light urban commuter vehicles and not try to compete in the SUV and pickup markets. The technology just isn't there yet as far as J/kg goes.
