The free-phone ones were utter carp, most manufacturers' base models are. My brother has an AX8600 that has done very well in almost a year of use so far - did have to replace it once, but that was because the rep at the phone store didn't know beans about updating firmware on the phone and consequently scribbled all over the flash memory with a firmware-updater on the wrong settings.
