Using those two things to keep awareness of your surroundings can do far more than any other thing to keep you safe. Then if you carry a firearm it is just insurance if you can not get out of trouble fast enough or are cornered.

I have found that many times in "bad parts of town" being aware of my surroundings has prevented me from becoming a victim several time. The fact that I am a fairly large person does not hurt either. :)
