Scenario: Johnny is gay.

1958 - He gets beaten to a pulp every day at school by bullies. He grows up hating himself and kills himself by the age of 30 (or is perhaps killed by others).

2008 - He is accepted for who he is and grows up to be a normal productive adult who just happens to be of a different sexual preference.

The 1950s were NOT all rosy. Those who did not conform to strict social norms were tormented and often killed. Those social norms include being white, straight and not communist or even remotely resembling communist.
