Another photography question . . . by hadji2008-04-28 08:03:27
It's a bit like comparing pears with oranges.... by shargo 2008-04-28 14:02:42
Take a really fast negative film (~ISO 1600)- Large easy visible grains. On the other hand a slow positive film like Kodachrome 25 - I wouldn't be surprised if it compared to GigaPixels...
Both can be used in any 35mm camera.

In my experience the digital cameras I've used (Nikon & Canons better amateur-models) is not as good as film when it comes to really dark/bright situations (<rant> and I do NOT like flashes, removed from camera perhaps but not cameramounted. </rant>).

How will you use your pics?
5 meter high with a projector? (1600x1200 way to low...)
A postcard sized print in the album?
Fullsize print in a quality magazine?

When your images are printed both from film and digital this also affects the result.

It's easier to compensate a digital image afterwards for different problems (like that it's got a slight blue tone after photographing in the shadows a sunny summerday). Start Gimp (or other app) and play around.
It's easier to cut the picture and get it printed like you want.

With this (and a bit more) in mind my conclusion is this:
For the majority of purposes a good digital SLR is a better choice. It's more flexible - you don't have to change film to change basic settings.

However the most important part while buying a camera is still the lens.
And now to an interesting note: Choose the right D-SLR & Optics and you can buy a used film-SLR that can use the same Optics!
So in this case you can have the best of two worlds! :-)
(Ask for D-SLR house that can use optics from film-SLR, there is special optics for D-SLRs but $$$$$)
