Once you swear that, you can't renege on your obligation and still be obligated. Your knowledge that you possess a chance of a cure places an obligation upon you.

Saying the virus is what kills them and ignoring the available options is *allowing* the virus to kill them. It's like watching someone get run over by a train even though you possess the ability to save them without harm to yourself. In that case, the way I see it, you've played a part in their death, and no amount of saying "the train did it" will change the fact that you could have done something about it..
