Once you swear that, you can't renege on your obligation and still be obligated. Your knowledge that you possess a chance of a cure places an obligation upon you. Saying the virus is what kills them and ignoring the available options is allowing the virus to kill them. It's like watching someone get run over by a train even though you possess the ability to save them without harm to yourself. In that case, the way I see it, you've played a part in their death, and no amount of saying "the train did it" will change the fact that you could have done something about it..
