It's ok to disagree with authority. It's ok to not always get things done by a specified deadline, with good reason. This is a very valuable life skill that has not been taught much, if at all, in schools. This also allows for a fair and reasonable appeals process if a student feels he has been treated unfairly.

Also, good writing skills are important for all aspects of grown-up life. It might even teach a few to write full sentences on the internet.
