It's an IPS panel so it's got very good viewing angles and and 24-bit colour. If the mac you saw was a 24" iMac then that's an IPS panel too.

24-bit colour is pretty common on the higher end monitors now, it's only the cheap TN ones that don't have it.

I don't know about linearity/colour discreteness but I would think a lot of that would be down to the general quality of many LCDs, although I don't have any experience of whether the NEC can do it.

On responsiveness, my CRT suffers from some serious ghosting-like effect itself wheras I think the best LCDs only have a single transparent ghost nowadays. I don't know how good this is on the best CRTs so maybe some catchup is still needed there.
