1) It's highly unlikely they're medically trained.
2) Even if they are, they have a conflict of interest (same reason Dr's don't treat their own families).
3) Asking the parents does nothing but shift responsibility.
If the Dr gives the parent the choice, and the parent chooses wrong, the parents will be stuck with the knowledge *THEY* killed their baby. Hard as it is, it is far easier for an objective Dr to rationalize a death like this, than it would be for a parent.
