you believe that neither choice is more ethical; that's your answer. That's fine.

Whether certainty of life to one child is better than possibility of life to both is not "information that isn't part of the question"; the point of the discussion of the question is not simply to answer the question, but to discover the answerer's opinion on whether the certainty is "better than" the probability. In other words, the point of the exercise isn't to answer the question, it's to expose one's pre-conceptions. You appear to be assuming that the point is to answer the question.
