It isn't enough to know the rules. You also have to practice and train.

Knowing where your target is isn't enough. You have to be able to hit it. You also need to know what's behind it. A 9mm handgun inside a house to fight off an intruder might not be so bad. A 20mm Vulcan Cannon is a different story.

Yes, you do need to know the capabilities of your firearm. Even the lowly .22 LR can go 3.2 miles. Generally though you aren't firing those in the air at exactly 45 degrees. You need to figure some realism into this.
