Where I grew up (in North County) was the place to be from about 100 years ago until about 60 years ago. Then, blacks started moving in (often returning servicement, with GI housing grants) and the whites moved out to the next belt of suburbs - places like Maryland Heights, Overland, and St. Ann. As these became more desirable, many blacks moved out there, and some whites moved farther out, into St. Charles County. Now, people are moving even farther out.
I was lucky to grow up in a mixed environment, about 60% black - by now (25 years later) that neighborhood is about 98% black. |
