I agree. I was raised the same way. When telling my grandma what the girl scout leader said was the only time I know of my mother has ever said that word. The only time I've ever said it was explaining to my principal what the boy next to me in class called my friend. I punched him for calling her that. I didn't know what it meant, but I knew he meant it to be mean, and I was protective of the people I car about even then (2nd grade). And I'm doing my best to make sure my kids are raised not to be racist.
