In general, I think digital surpasses most film, until you start getting into 4x5 or larger film. There may be specialty niches where film could do better, but that's improving over time. Large format film is significantly cheaper than professional digital though. That's because the market for large format film is disappearing as everyone moves to digital. The workflow improvements for digital significantly outweigh the extra cost though, since (as a pro) the key is to sell as many pics as possible.
For standard 4x6 prints, I think a quality 6-8 Mpx would do fine. The key word being quality. That can be tough to find.
Light sensitivity is defined by the speed or ISO rating of the camera/film. Generally, the higher the ISO, the worse the picture will be. The problem with most digital cameras is they massively blur the image as ISO goes up. This is to reduce noise. For 4x6 prints, it's probably not too noticeable though.
If you want to go counter-culture, check out the Sigma line of cameras. I've seen stunning prints from these up to A0 size. And they're pretty cheap too (for the quality). |
