my mom grew up in a small town in Wyoming. She was born in 1953 so as to give an idea of the time frame. The town was so diverse that my mom never even realized that her best friend was a different race until her girl scout leader pointed it out, very rudely. It was the first time my mom ever heard the n word in her life. She told my grandmother what the girl scout leader had said, and the parents of almost every little girl in the troop promptly removed their daughters from the troop because they didn't want their kids around a racist. I admit, that was not the most common thing back then. But it happened sometimes.
