Abiogenesis (the origin of life) is a separate, but related study from evolution. To my limited knowledge, there is no very compelling model for abiogenesis, exogenisis/distant origin theory/"life came from space" just side steps the issue. There are some pretty cool experiments involving self-replicating protein chains, on a clay substrate.
