I try to avoid using the native MS AV/Firewall/Anti-Spyware bits. In all the reviews I've ever seen, they perform significantly worse than their 3rd Party counterparts. MS has more bloat, is less effective, & is more prone to being hacked than anything else. AVG, Spybot Search & Destroy, & Firefox+NoScript had kept my XP system more secure than anything that MS has ever released. (N.B., I now run Linux, but I still have my XP drive that is booted-to when I absolutely must run Windows.)
