He was assisting the US Military (doing satellite communications stuff). One of the places they needed him was Kabul, unfortunately for him the airport isn't on the base (he'd just spent time hopping choppers in Iraq so he was used to the "security" having the airport on base offered). He said the worst was when the got stuck in a traffic jam downtown Kabul; they were riding in a Suburban without tinted windows. When someone tried to cut them off one of the officers brandished his M16 at the the other guy; the other guy backed down real quick.
