I have to agree with you, with a couple of provisos. One is that weapons are needed in order to deal with other, less developed societies. Which means that a few professionals will need to use weapons in the course of doing their job. Another is somewhat related - some of those other, less developed societies might exist as subcultures within the truly civilized society. Should they have the same access to weapons that can be given to members of the truly civilized society? And that raises the question of how to define a society - if it can be geographically distinct, or if it refers to a specific group of people, or what?
What may provoke flames is a discussion of how to progress towards this truly civilized society - whether restricting weapons will help or hinder progress. But you did not ask about that, so I will refrain from stating an opinion :-) |
