If someone is willing to pay me to do it, and if I do a poor job of it someone will notice, I get the job done and do it well. The types of jobs you get, and the work assigned to you, can often be traced back to how good of a reputation you have. Not always, obviously (the PHB does exist after all), but as a general rule.
