I do feel that way about cats and dogs, though. by Phoon 2008-03-29 22:13:28
Particularly kittens. When I was young, I went to an animal shelter and they had a cage (basically a "stall") full of kittens. They were all just adorable. I wanted to adopt every single one of them.

To this day, I'm hesitant to visit an animal shelter, knowing that there'll be a similar cage. Why do I feel guilty about thinking of adopting one of them? I know, on one level, that if there are N kittens there, and I adopt one, then only N-1 kittens will be left there... but deeper, I feel that I'm causing those other N-1 kittens to suffer. (Oddly enough, if I *don't* adopt a kitten, all N of them will suffer, but that's not really bothering me...)

I guess it boils down to, who am I to decide who gets to escape that environment and who is forced to stay?
