Haven't found any obvious 'manual retract' mechanism.

And I think I found what killed it. The second computer I plugged it into has FireWire ports that aren't keyed properly. I just tried plugging a FireWire hard drive in, and, just like the camcorder, I did it by feel first. Plugged it in backward, and killed the FireWire drive case. (The drive itself still works fine, in a different case.)

Freakin' user error. GAH! I thought one of the key benefits of FireWire was the keying to prevent plugging in backwards!
