In the real world, competition for resources tends to limit that. That's the starting point for natural selection.
To take an example from Disney, Nemo's parents had 400 eggs, only Nemo survived. If ALL of them survived, and had 400 eggs per couple, after a few generations the ocean would be NOTHING but sickeningly cute CGI clownfish.
Obviously something must cause most of the 400 eggs to die off. Competition for resources, and being eaten by other animals. On average, each pair of animals will have 2 offspring that survive to make the next generation.
The major artificial element in all these simulations is the selection criteria. In this case it was for keeping better time. In the real world the selection may be fairly obvious: able to get food better, avoid being eaten better, be more attractive, or may be non-obvious. |
