Add water 1:2 by volume (one cup rice / two cups water). Mix well, do not drain and let it soak for atleast 15 mins. Put on stove, bring to boil and then let it simmer till the water is almost gone. Take it off the stove.

Add salt during the boiling stage if you prefer that. And if you are making biryani, chop some onions into fine slices and deep fry till brown. Add that as garnishing on teh top.
