Sorry, but I agree with her. Even if you had no choice as to where you were going to live, even if you were forced to relocate to a country where you couldn't speak the language - in the interests of self-preservation and harmony, it would be best if you learned the language of your adopted country, even if only basic everyday phrases, just as quickly as you could.

No-one is saying you can't still speak your original language - just learn the new one enough to get by day-to-day.
