Since we are almost in a recession by imrambi2008-03-20 11:48:51
  It's not a recession, it's just prices going up by murphoid2008-03-20 12:05:36
Price of flour's also up because wheat prices are by toysbfun2008-03-20 12:09:35
As murphoid said: because of the ethanol by UnFair 2008-03-20 13:21:00
The increase in demand for crop originates in the realisation that you can burn it in combustion engines as a substitute for fossil oil and derivates instead of feeding people. The people are competing now with the engines for the crop.

The same happens here in germany and people will be surprised to see the impact on their way of living. Reason: Here it affects rye, which is used for beer brewing. The crop in the fields were changed to corn to make ethanol. The price for the now rare special brewing quality rye goes up fast and high - and beer will be substantial more expensive in the coming months and even in the years to come. (Especially since the spoiled fields used for corn cannot easily be changed back!)
