If I'm in a country where I don't know the language, I still expect to be able to get by.

Only Americans are bigoted enough to expect everyone ELSE to know THEIR language.

Of course, one can be rude or polite about trying to order something with insufficient language skills. But pre-emptive rudeness? That's just rude.
