...the tone of the message. It's one thing to have a sign in your window that conveys that the proprietor of the shop has a certain religious/political belief. It's quite another to insinuate that someone who doesn't share that belief will get sub-standard service.

Although, I have met people who say that the mere fact of putting such an indication up means that there will be differences in the service received. Most of the 'proof' for that is anecdotal, but I also can't say I've seen scientific proof to refute the claim either.
