Mostly in Paris, at that. I spoke passable (if slow) French, and everyone was quite polite. Perhaps because they uniformly guessed (I don't know why) that I was British. But given some insensitive and downright vile behavior by my fellow citizens while I was there, I can understand why some of the French don't like Americans.
