Also, some organizations have a "tapping out" ceremony for new members. Usually, when this is done, the nominees don't know (or at least aren't sure) they are about to be invited into the organization. For instance, the National Honor Society in my high school would call an assembly once a year where they would tap out the new members from the entire population of school. Since you had to apply to be in the NHS, you knew there was a possibility. But you could be sure you'd be tapped out until your name was called.
