Re going to cons: I never went to the big media/gaming cons. Mostly SF cons within 6 hours drive of my house and worldcon when it's in the US. However, having kids and other financial issues has put a damper on travel and conventions. Unless I can get comped in because I'm presenting or playing a gig (which hasn't happened since 2001, BTW), I can't afford to go. It's no fun sharing a room with a teenager at a convention, and we can't afford separate rooms. I have more privacy at home and a convention where the spouse and I can't have "couple time" (if you know what I mean) is not really worth attending, IMO.

I do want to go to DragonCon at some point.

Of course, it would be completely different if I were an author instead of "just a fan". And last year's Philcon (aside from meeting jmaxshomer) was really lame, as in low attendance, and the lackluster art show, dealer's room, and programming that accompanies a dying convention. The ROI is just not there. There are much better things I can do with 600 dollars.
