Firstly, it be bad hardware. Hit one bad byte in memory and WHOOSH! Fandango on the core.
Same thing can happen with bad disk sectors.
It can even be a card that isn't seated 100% correctly. Overheating, bad PSU, or even just dirty power.
*nix's do have that capability you asked for but they can be configured incorrectly.
So does Windows in the NT line. The problem is that MS had such a broad base of users and applications for their programs that they built in backwards compatibility to prevent everyone from having to upgrade everything at exactly the same time. This allows obsolete programming techniques to take down the system.
I know of people running software designed 30 years ago running their financials. Even if it was updated, someone is still going to cut and paste routines right into the new version.
Computers are just too complex for any one person to fully understand them. Well, except for those people who can read a coredump, but the High Wizards that can perform such Deep Magic are rare and they cost a fortune to hire. It's cheaper to reboot every now and again. |
