  Mac OS X by techrealm 2008-03-19 23:07:44
has a good "sandbox to play in" methodology for applications so when they lockup or crash it doesn't tank the computer. The BSD / Unix-like underpinnings help that (ok the MACH kernal project)... For techie details see: How OS X Executes Applications Older versions of Mac OS used to have adjustable memory caps for each application, but that essentially went away with the successful implementations of greatly increased ram sizes and virtual drive / virtual memory in OS X.
