Many thanks...
--The TCP/IP protocol is indeed checked.
--DHCP shows enabled (I think, will verify tonight)
--I'll try setting an IP address myself.
--Checked the services. I think all the Auto ones were started, but will check tonight
--Great idea to check the event viewer! hadn't thought of that one.
--No new software or hardware. Was working on a Friday evening, shut it down. When I started up on Saturday, Windows said I had to verify XP. That's when everything went kerblooey.
--Not sure about UDP. Isn't that a separate protocol that would show up in the connection properties? If so, IIRC it's not installed.
--Tried two alternate cables, but they gave no link light on the router. Have one other cable I can try tonight. It's on the kids' machine, so I know it's working.
--(Windows) Firewall says it can't run.
--Can't think of what services would be required that aren't running... a few names would help in my checking (maybe they'll show up in the event viewer, too... I'll look for those).
--OS is on same partition as Program Files (but my freelance work, media, and backup files are on a different physical disk). I'd love to partition out the OS but it's the C drive, pretty full, I'd probably muck up the whole thing (IOW, I'm a'scared to).

Thanks so much for all the ideas so far. I'm going to go through the list tonight and see what's what on these items.

And I'll try to do a diary post soon.
