If Windows XP suddently asked you to reactivate for the invoked reason that the hardware has changed, it just might be possible that the hardware DID change (as in, the hardware, parts of it anyway, became defective...).

You did not describe the hardware in any detail. Is there an ACTUAL "network card" (to quote your own words), or were you referring to an onboard Ethernet interface?

Do you have any hardware diagnostics tools on hand to check the RAM, motherboard, devices, ports, etc...?
