anybody: advice on tcp/ip problem (winxp pro) by EON 2008-03-19 10:26:25
My next PC is a Mac!

The day MS said I had to "verify" (or was it "authenticate"?) my XP Pro installation within the next 3 days due to hardware changes (and I successfully did so -- over the phone, even though nothing's changed in my hardware in the past 12 months or so), I lost all TCP/IP connectivity on that desktop machine.
--IPConfig says it can't query the host
--netsh commands fail
--Removing and reinstalling the Windows networking client did not help.
--The ethernet card says it's working properly, and the link light is on -- and steady -- on my wireless router (this is the router control machine, so that's where the cable goes). I un- and re-installed the drivers for it anyway.
--The kids' PC and the laptop are connecting to the outside world just fine.
--Avast found no viruses.

So, do I have to reinstall XP Pro? If so, how painful will it be to recover from that?

I don't post here much, I know, so I'm not "one of the gang" -- but I've been, well, lurking I guess, for at least a year now. I hope if one of this great crowd has any advice, you'll be willing to share it.

Not sure I can revert to a previous system state... I think for some reason that never got working on the machine in question. But I'm going to take a look at that tonight or tomorrow...

If I get TCP/IP back, my next project is to try to get old SQL Server 2000 off of there, don't need it any more, but it won't un-install via add/remove programs, nor via the installation CD. Gaaack.

Thanks
