the human brain can't typically hold more than 7 steps in its head at any given time (and often less than that). I am assuming your "expert-level" step description says something like "Perform $task" (where $task is a hyperlink to the more basic/tyro description, or following $task is the phrase "for more information click $link"). But this is the life of the tech writer. At least you have information. I have to write installation instructions for 50 separate pieces of equipment (more or less), and nobody's been able to show me how it's done so I can document it (they're all too busy fixing bugs), and it's due in about 1 month.
