Because it sounds like you might be in the age group in question. :) Just because they are your age doesn't mean you have to defend them. I was taught that if I did something wrong, I would pay a price. If I brought home Fs, I not only lost all privileges such as TV and Atari (oh hush) for several weeks, I would end up with belt-marks on my rear for my lack of effort at school. If I saved my lunch money (skipping lunch) and bought something that I had been forbidden to buy - it would be destroyed or otherwise removed. I would NEVER be allowed to benefit from wrongdoing. If a child does something wrong, you explain why it was wrong, and punish the child. You do not allow the child to win. Ever.
