I had a programming instructor who pointed out that a well written program doesn't have to be festooned with comments. He wasn't arguing against comments, just that it is not too hard to code so that they can be kept to a minimum. At that time, I was still in old school Fortran mode, using x,y,z,etc. for variable names, so his comment struck a cord.
