...if I'm financially short OR if a gift can't arrive in time for the day, I find a picture of the gift and create a document/coupon/certificate letting the recipient know that this item is on its way. I've also done "service" certificates, where I offer to do something (cook a meal, babysit, give a massage) for the recipient at a time and place of the recipient's choosing.
