Firearms allow the weak to defend themselves against violent criminals. They have a deterrence factor because criminals do not want to die any more then you do. They are not going to just start shooting people like you want to believe because that also increases their risk.

Simple fact, gun control at best has no effect on crime; at worst it increases violent crime.
