Question for the people in the UK: by SnArL2008-02-13 10:47:58
This is how the scabble war of '86 started by psyop 2008-02-13 12:32:41
Just because the US and the UK share, for the most part, a common language does not mean that we are culturally identical. I found that I suffered more from cultural shock in the UK than I did when I lived in France or Turkey. I knew that outlooks and norms were going to be different in each of those places; after all they did not speak English. I did not expect to have a major cultural disconnect when I moved to London town.

It was the little things that took me by surprise. Not the sort of stuff you necessarily notice when you are a tourist, but the stuff that can have an impact when you live and work someplace. My problem was that I mistook common cultural roots for a common cultural.

My point, and there is one, is that the difficulty of folks from the UK in understanding the US gun culture is understandable, and not surprising when you look at the issue from a UK perspective. The converse is true for UK types trying to understand the US fascination/infatuation with firearms. From a UK perspective it just looks nuts. While the debate is interesting, and the Monty Python and references enjoyable, I can’t help but feel everyone is talking past one another.

All this from a guy who could not understand why his girlfriend was upset when his mother said she was “quite happy” that they were going to be married.
