Nothing will ever make people safe, that is simply part of what we call life.

I should have said that they make people safer.

The vast majority of murders are not armed thugs mugging old ladies, they emotional crimes committed on the spur of the moment. If you reduce the number of lethal implements that are easily to hand then you will reduce the death toll and so make people safer.
There will always be some fairly lethal bits of metal in the kitchen so there are limits to what can be done but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try.
