I still remember the good old days when all computing was done through a terminal connected to a mainframe. Back in the days when a 300 baud acoustic modem was normal, and 1200 baud was blazingly fast.

Speed has gone up, and the capability of the terminal is vastly superior. But local processing is more and more used strictly for display - data retrieval and processing takes place in the server farm.
