Yes. See "chronic daily headache" or "transformed migraine". Try not to laugh too much at the goofy picture of me next to those terms in the medical dictionary.
No luck with triptans, beta/calcium channel blockers, SxRIs, etc.
Reduced stress and rather better self-esteem have generally reduced the intensity, if not the frequency. Constant fatigue and pain response to light or sound. Average twice a month for actual headaches. The temporary loss of part of my visual field (it's not black, it's not gray, it's just not there... rather like a null value, or perhaps a fnord), the ringing in the ears, and a few other sensory effects tend to precede the more severe pain.
The last doc gave me Vicodin for the pain, and a prior doc said up to 4 of the liquid-filled Advil caplets at a time were safe (800mg). I mostly use the former to dull the pain enough to sleep, though even that's sometimes insufficient. The Advil I use sparingly when I have to work through one that's not bad enough to send me home.
But be very careful with the frequency of medication. Migraines "rebound" from many painkillers, often coming on stronger.
And medication includes caffeine. It's the withdrawal that can trigger one, but caffeine can actually halt a migraine if taken early enough. If you drink lots of soda or coffee in a short time every day, try spreading your intake over the entire day. A cup of coffee in the morning and a liter of brewed iced tea spread over the rest of the day helps avoid the withdrawal for me. |
