What points is he being given in the first scenario, and how does he earn or lose them? I'm confuzzled.

If the boss wants him to stay, give him a dressing down. If not, fire him.

This seems like a cruel way of getting rid of him in order to keep the rest of you in line.

My suggestion is to get out of there post-haste. This is cruel and unusual punishment, as described in the Constituion.
