Watch the very start again, when they're talking about the end of Earth that was. All the worlds they're talking about in the "now", are all in the same general location (there's a map at the start that describes it). The "Edge of Space" would be the boundaries of this area. For example, Miranda was on the edge of space. It's not that there's nothing beyond it ... Just no humans or settled planets.
