DVD-R and DVD+R are using the same wave length. Reading the one and/or the other is a matter of software, where as reading HD-DVD and BluRay is a matter of hardware *and* software.

Same is true for writing the formats (and fully supporting the interactive features of HD-DVD and BluRay isn't exactly done immediately, either).

In short: The comaprison of HD-DVD vs. BluRay to Betamax vs. VHS is much more valid than comparing them to DVD+R and DVD-R.
