No there is a fundamental difference, the reason one format out of VHS and Betamax "won" is very simple VHS tapes don't fit Betamax decks and vice-versa (and at the time a dual deck would have been infeasable).

Whereas an HD-DVD and a BD are the same form factor (same as DVD+/-R), with the addition of the appropriate laser all all players will handle both, therefore no winner (and dual format players are available today).

Doesn't matter which studios choose what format at that point because all players/writers will be dual format, i.e. Fanboys can STFU.
